Recently completed project

The JOWA USA service manager, Phil Baxter, recently completed the commissioning of the tank level gauging system on the vessel shown in the photo.  The vessel is an FSO (Floating Storage & Offloading) vessel that was converted from a tanker.  The FSO will be anchored in the Benchamas oil field in the Gulf of Thailand.  The tank level gauging system is a backup to the radar based system.  It is a 14 tank system that is connected to a Sentry IV electronics system to provide both visual display of tank levels and digital output to the vessel supervisory and control system.

• The FSO Benchamas 2 has undergone a naming and delivery ceremony at the MMHE West Yard in Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia, according to MISC Berhad.
• In August 2016, Chevron awarded MISC Offshore Floating Terminals Ltd. a lease and operations contract for the FSO. The project marks MISC’s maiden foray into Thailand’s offshore oil and gas industry as well as its first collaboration with Chevron in the offshore market.
• The FSO will be deployed at the Chevron-operated Benchamas field in the Gulf of Thailand. It has a storage capacity of 650,000 bbl with a design life of 12 years without drydocking.
• Conversion of the Aframax tanker Bunga Kelena 5 to the FSO Benchamas 2 began in early 2017, and was completed as planned. MISC said that the project took more than 2.2 million man-hours to complete.
• The turret will allow the FSO vessel to weathervane and continue operations in relatively high wind and wave environments. This capability reduces vessel motions and accelerations and allows continual transfer of liquid hydrocarbons regardless of vessel heading.
• The FSO Benchamas 2 will replace the existing FSO, which was originally installed in 1999.
• The new vessel will be permanently moored with nine anchor legs arranged in a three x three configuration terminating at the seabed with piled anchors. It will be connected to two 8-in. flexible risers for crude oil and one 6-in. flexible riser for fuel gas. The existing PLEM and anchor legs will be reused except for the top chain which will be replaced with a new section.
